The appeal is predictability: you know your cost upfront, and if you play often enough, the cost per round can end up far lower than paying green fees each time.
The catch: if life gets in the way and you play fewer rounds than planned, that same membership can quietly become an expensive way to golf. The only way to know for sure is to track how many rounds the membership actually covered against what you paid, and see the real cost per round it worked out to.
The pay-and-play case
Pay-and-play offers flexibility: you can chase good weather, try new courses, and never pay for rounds you don't take. For golfers who travel often or play irregularly, this can work out cheaper overall — but it can also mean paying peak weekend rates more often than a member would, since you don't have off-peak access baked into a membership deal.
How to actually answer the question for yourself
The break-even point depends on three numbers: what the membership costs, what an equivalent green fee costs at that course, and how many rounds you realistically play there in a year. Divide the membership cost by the number of rounds it actually covered, and compare that number to what you'd have paid per round without it. If the membership's cost-per-round comes in below the standard green fee, it paid for itself. If it doesn't, pay-and-play would have been cheaper.
